Homeschooling Is At A Crossroads – Great Success, and a Greater Threat

Advocate Bruce Shortt
To Lay it on the Line at the

National Black Home Educators Conference

Baton Rouge, LA, July 27, 2007 — Homeschooling has never been more widespread or broadly  accepted in contemporary America – nor has it ever been so threatened by forces apparently beyond its control, according to homeschooling advocate Bruce Shortt, an attorney and author of the “Harsh Truth about Public School.”

“More American parents are embracing homeschooling than ever before,” Shortt, a board member of Homeschooling Family to Family (HFTF), explained, “yet the forces arrayed against homeschooling – including teachers unions, the education establishment and activist politicians who want to federalize schooling down to the preschool level – have never been stronger or more motivated.  This isn’t an issue constrained to one race, or to parents holding a specific religious faith. Homeschooling crosses all boundaries of race, ethnic origin, family income and religious preference – and the threat to homeschooling parents is as acute for black parents as it is for Asian, Hispanic or white parents,” Shortt pointed out.

This is the strong, challenging message homeschooling advocate Bruce Shortt will be bringing to the National Black Home Educators’ (NBHE) Summer Symposium, to be held at the in  Baton Rouge, Louisiana on July 25 and 27, 2007.  To get this message across, Shortt will be hosting a booth at NBHE Symposium with the theme, “Who is raising our children?”  Shortt is basing his message on years of practical, in-the-trenches experience of advocating homeschooling options before non-profit and religious organizations.  For instance, Shortt has been co-sponsor of several successful homeschooling resolutions during the past three sessions of the Southern Baptist Convention.

At the NBHE Symposium, Shortt will be presenting his Paul Revere-like message while hosting a booth sponsored by Homeschooling Family to Family (HFTF), an outreach of Frontline Ministries.   As part of their larger outreach and advocacy mission, HFTF has a goal to encourage each homeschooling family to mentor one new family into homeschooling each year.

“The NHBHRA believes that family homeschooling lifestyle is so mysterious, so full of excitement, and so very different,” explained founder of the National Black Home Educators Resource Association, Joyce Burges “What we call ‘the educating family’ embraces these good things in family life, and extends them to the education process. Homeschooling parents believe in giving our children the absolute best with a standard of excellence - you might say that this is our mantra.  Our shared passion for love and grace guides us to give our best, and in doing so, we ensure that time honored lessons are taught – as a result, a unique sense of style is evident among homeschooling parents with diverse backgrounds and nuances of faith and belief.”

The NBHE symposium is being held at the Embassy Suites Hotel with Friday evening’s scheduled events are from 6:30PM—9:30PM, while Saturday’s events are from 8:00AM – 5:00PM.

The National Black Home Educators was created to serve the African-American homeschooling community by providing assistance with information about getting started in homeschooling, networking and connecting veteran families with new families, as well as recommending resources such as books, music, films, speaking information and curriculum. NBHE’s mission endeavors to empower black parents to personally educate their children for excellence.
