Season of Re-Education

What is a Season of Re-Education?  Barb Shelton came up with this phrase.  From her site: The foundation of my message is that we each need to seek God on HIS idea of education, and listen to His voice over the many loud voices of the world. His burden ~ even for educating our children ~ is easy, His yoke is light. The world's ways are heavy and ill-fitting, but it's all we know! And until we put ourselves through a "Season of Re-education and Renewing of the Mind" (which the Holy Spirit can lead you through even without this course!), we will continue to think we need to do it the world's way, and spend hundreds of dollars doing so. God has something better, but it's unique for each family. This course is designed to help increase your ability to hear God for the education of your children, but first, the education of Mom (and Dad)! In fact, Marilyn Howshall has written a book on this very topic!

It's really a time for homeschoolers to shake off their ideas that school is a building and realize that learning happens all the time.  You taught your child to tie their shoes, feed themselves and do many difficult things before they were 5 years old.  Many of you may have taught your children to read before they were 5 years old.  This type of teaching, when it's available, as life presents the opportunity, as the child ask their constant questions, is what many of us consider homeschooling.

When a child comes home from school, they may not know what to do and whine about being bored. They have had people telling them when to get up, get on the bus, stand in line, how to draw, what to draw, when to go to the bathroom, and what is the *right way* to do all kinds of things.  They will need a time to discover they own rhythm of life.  They will be bored until they find their innate interests again.  Once they have de-schooled and found their love of learning again, then it's time to start homeschooling, whether you decide on a structured format or a relaxed format.

During your season of re-education, it's great to go to field trips, visit relatives in distance cities, explore historic sites, museums, parks and zoos.  You will be giving your child a taste of many things to help them learn what they are interested in.  And this is also considered learning, even if it is not at a desk with a book in hand.  Usually once you get home from such a place, the first thing the kids want to do is read books about the subject they just experienced or do an internet search about it.
